I keep hearing simplistic solutions for the nation’s and the world’s problems that are based on the idea that those Others need to get their act together, that we should shut out or eliminate people who aren’t like us, or force them to conform to our idea of what is right and responsible.  All we have to do, they say, is to raise up a strong leader to save us from the unwashed and unenlightened that threaten us from every side.

 

Once I believed that this could happen, but then I grew up.

 

Welcome to adulthood. A path set in the real world is nuanced and ambiguous, no matter how people may long for simplicity.  And it is that longing for simplicity that leads many into abdicating responsibility and begging someone to just tell them what to do... (more)
