Notes of the January 28, 2007 Meeting of the Peace and Justice Group (P&J)
(Thanks to Patricia Terry)
The following were present: Chris Angelo, Wanda Arcos, Laurie Dodson, Laura Geisel, Margy Harrell, Amy Hanrahan, Hal
Hurst, Gene Hussan, Cameron Jones, Edwin Kampmann, Jean Manning, Patricia Terry, Carol Vedder, Dan Wilson, and Audrie
Wing.
The meeting convened at 11:30 AM.
Margy Harrell led us in group opening prayer using a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer.
Margy proposed the agenda for the meeting which consisted of the following items:
A. Organizational Developments;
B. Shrove Tuesday;
C. The Website;
D. Handouts; and
E. Announcements.
Presentations were made and discussion followed on each item as set forth below:
A. Organizational Developments
(1) The following leaders were proposed for each of the following areas of leadership:
Co-Leaders: Margy Herrell, Cheryl Proval, and Dan Wilson
Secretary: Hal Hurst
Scribes: Laura Geisel and Patricia Terry
Treasurer: (To be determined)
Youth Liaisons: Chris Angelo and Laurie Dodson
Publicity and Outreach: Chris Angelo and Laura Geisel
Co-Chaplains: Mary Munford and Patricia Terry
Webmaster: Hal Hurst
Notes:
(a.) The first task for the Youth Liaisons will be to meet with the youth to ask them what they are interested
in. They will approach Rev. Rachel Nyback to help facilitate the meeting and identify who they should meet with.
(b.) Scribes provide electronic notes of our meetings to Hal who will finalized and distributed
them. We have two scribes, but at least one more is needed to share the work on a rotating basis so that no one
is overburdened.
(c.) The position of Treasurer will not be a big one since many of the events that we participate in have
their own treasurers, e.g., Shrove Tuesday and CROP walk.
(2) The following project leaders were identified:
CROP Walk: Amy Hanrahan and Cheryl Proval
Book Committee: Edwin Kampmann, Charles Gessler, Mary Mumford, and Patricia Terry
Corazon: Richard Lawrence and Hal Hurst
Darfur: Wanda Arcos
Earth Day: Laura Geisel
Feeding the Hungry: Dan Wilson
Health Care: Chris Angelo and Amy Hanrahan
Heifer Project/ERD Animal Donations: Chris Angelo and Laura Geisel
Millennium Development Goals: Patricia Terry
Peace: Cheryl Proval
Shrove Tuesday: Cameron Johnson
Speaker Forum: Wanda Arcos and Dan Wilson. (Edwin Kampmann is considering whether to also
be a leader on this project.)
Website: Hal Hurst
Notes:
(a.) Amy Hanrahan recommended adding Health Care to our list of projects. She feels that it
is time to write letters to our representatives know we support this and the congregation will need to be educated
on the issues. Those present agreed.
(b.) With regard to letter writing, it was noted that personal letters are good but e-mail is quicker.
Also, there is no anthrax-related letter delay when you write letters to local congressional offices as opposed to those located
in Washington, D.C.
(c.) Wanda raised the question of whether a separate legislative liaison (i.e., keeping track of legislation,
promoting letter writing campaigns) is needed for all of the projects or if each leader would be responsible for their
own legislative issues. Discussion followed but no decision was made.
(d.) We discussed the need to have at least one Crossroads article about P&J each month. Laura
offered to help write articles. There should also be items on the bulletin boards about all of our activities when they
come up. In addition, each project should have something describing it on the website.
B. Shrove Tuesday
Cameron Johnson told us the types of jobs for which volunteers are needed for Shrove Tuesday.
They are as follows:
1. People are needed to sell beads, masks, and tickets before and after the 10AM
service. A sign up sheet was passed around at the meeting but not all of the time slots have been filled.
2. Betty Ferrer? needs help in the kitchen making pancakes and sausage, etc.
(There will also be King Cake and gumbo.)
3. We need people to help decorate and set up tables the day before the event,
which is a holiday (President's Day). Also, the Balloons need to be put of the day of the event.
4. Parade Managers are needed to supervise the parade and announce the "winning
tickets" for various parade honors, e.g., "horn blowers".
5. We need lots of people for the clean-up crew. If we get 30 or more
people, we can clean up in less than 30 minutes and be out of there by 8:30 PM.
Note: Volunteered so far are: Carol ?, Bea Floyd, Laurie Dodson,
Amy Hanrahan, Margie Herrell, Hal Hurst, Diane and Ed Margrave, Patricia Terry, Susan Tucker, Dan Wilson, and Audrie
Wing.
C. The Website
Hal Hurst gave a report on the website. Hal has spoken with Rev. Paul Lawson and it is currently being decided
whether the church website will include a link to our website. Hal says that he sees us as being able to provide a service
to other ministries in the chuch by sharing our space on the web. They could have a separate web address to our site
to put up their own stuff and would not even have to be linked to our subject matter. The group expressed its gratitude
and thanks for the wonderful work that Hal has done with the website.
Hal brought printouts of the various pages that he has formatted so far. He said the website would not
"go live" until it was more polished than it is now. Hal has requested that the members each contribute $10
towards the cost of the website to cover the $120 annual fee for a place in cyber-space, the cost of the domain
name of "do justice, love mercy" in a .org, .com, and net web address, plus other expenses such as the cost of being
listed in search engines under specific words.
Margy suggested that we tap the services of some of our professional editors and writers to help with the website.
Edwin suggested the used of disclaimers. Edwin also expressed an interest in putting together list of movies
and plays for the webstie and to come up with ways to be more interactive with other South Bay peace and justice groups.
Dan recommended that the P&J leadership meet with the clergy before the website goes public. It
was agreed that such a meeting was necessary and would take place before the website "went live."
Patricia recommended that we have an editorial policy for the public portion of the website, particularly if
the we are linked to the church's website. Such a policy, should we decide to have one, would not have
to apply to the "members only" portion of the website.
D. Handouts
1. Margie gave a handouts of the Friends Committee on National Legislation setting its priorities for the
110th Congress. They are as follows: To seek a world free of war and the threat of war; a society with equity
and justice for all; a community where every person may be fulfilled; and where the earth is restored. For more information,
see
www.fcnl.org.
2. Margie asked if the Iran article that went out with the meeting announcement was helpful. All
agreed it was helpful and that it was the type of thing that should go on our website.
3. Edwin handed out copies of two articles: One was about Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, who says
that faith this century's defining issue and says fundamentalism is the greatest threat to world peace and democracy.
The other article is a critique of the film, "Grbavic: The Land of My Dreams", which is about the psychic scars that
remain after the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.
E. Announcements
(a.) The P&J Book Committee recommends
"A Generous Orthodoxy" for the book project. The committee has been asked to provide P&J with excerpts or other information
about the book that we will be studying so that they can learn more about it before the study begins.
(b.) Audrie Wing reminded everyone about the Progressive Christians Annual Gala Benefit on February 19,
2007 in Pasadena, California at the Pasadena Hilton. The cost is $85. Cocktails will be served at 5PM and dinner
is at 6PM. The speakers at this event are Margus Borg and Thomas Hayden.
Closing Prayer was led by Dan Wilson.
The meeting adjourned at 12:30 PM
