· Opening:
· The Mid Year Evaluation meeting of the Peace and Justice Community at St
Cross was called to order with prayer at 10:08am on February, 7, 2009 in Parker Hall by Patricia Terry.
· Discussion:
o Patricia presented an overview of what
we have been involved in so far since the last August retreat (listed above). She
also led a discussion of tentative calendar of events for the remainder of the year as well as a draft of the brochure
for final approval.
o The Margaret Parker Lecture Series
§
Jeanne
Manning briefed the group that thought is being given to the possibility of the Margaret Parker Lecture Series being part
of the upcoming General Convention and if that is not possible the 2009 Diocesan Convention.
§
Dan
Wilson moved that we approach the clergy to move the responsibility of the series to "The Friends of Margaret Parker" (FOMP).
Ricardo seconded the motion. Motion carried unanimously. Peace and Justice will remain committed to the project financially
and as volunteers but the actual coordination of the event would go through FOMP.
o CROP WALK
§
It
will be on Saturday, April 25th starting at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro
§
Coordinators
Meeting on March 8th
§
Margy
Harrell and Cheryl Proval have agreed to take on the leadership of this project with regard to P&J.
§
There
is a new idea to make this a church-wide event (rather than an event sponsored primarily by P&J) by soliciting participation
of other groups within the church (ie; Youth Group, J2A, St. Claire's Guild, the Seniors Group, Men's Fellowship, etc), and
by making this more of a "church picnic' type of event on the day of the walk.
o PEACE DEMONSTRATION
§
Discussion
ensued as to whether or not we want to continue these events and/or the establishment
of a committee to figure out a new way to approach this issue.
§
Hal
moved that we change the day of the demonstrations to the last Thursday of the month. Laurie seconded the motion and the resolution
was passed.
§
What
will be the main focus of these demonstrations?
· Hal moved to schedule a meeting
to discuss the focus of demonstrations one week prior to the next demonstration. First focus meeting will be the 2/19/09 at
6:30pm, and the first Thursday demonstration will be on 2/26/09 at 5:00pm.
Seconded my Dan Wilson. Motion was passed unanimously.
· Possible focus topics for discussion
could be Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Veterans issues and the Holy Land
o 2ND TUESDAYS
§
'It's
Time For Action' is our next program on February 10
· Bread for the World
· Response to Rwanda
· Subverting Hatred study
· Micro-lending
§
March
topic at this time is Solar Cookers (but it is now up in the air)
§
Discussion
ensued on whether or not we should change the day for these events
§
Motion
by Hal to change the day to Thursdays for these meetings starting in May, seconded and carried.
§
April
Meeting will stay as is on 4/14
§
After
that, the next Thursday evening meetings will be on May 21, June 18 and then on hiatus during the summer
o CONSTANTINE'S SWORD
§
Motion
by Patsy to proceed with original plan to use the dvd of 'Constantine's Sword'
on 2nd Tuesday in April, and further that the Book Committee (with Dan) will work out a
possible 3 to 4 week program for study of the book culminating with a possible "Service of Reconciliation" with Temple
Shalom. Motion carried.
o SOLAR COOKERS
§
Hal
presented a summarization of his concerns on the project (basically asking . . . 'do
they work?'). Invitation has gone out to Jewish World Watch to present the Solar Cooker issue during a meeting some time
this summer. This presentation will address how cookers might help the people of Darfur,
and may supersede the 2nd Tuesday meeting in March. Possible demonstration of the solar cookers to the congregation of St.
Cross talked about for June 21st during the Fathers Day brunch.
o Pamphlet
§
Patsy
promoted group discussion regarding edits and changes to the pamphlet in order to make it available at the 'Newcomers Brunch' tomorrow (Sunday) at St. Cross Church. Changes
were suggested on how to make the pamphlet even more "readable". This is an ongoing
effort so changes can be made in the future if and when necessary. It will be
available at the new comers brunch on Sunday.
· New
Business
o Prism
§
Patricia
and Dina brought up the possibility Inviting Dennis Gibbs to give a talk and possible sermon at St Cross regarding the issue.
Mike suggested that this is something we need to bring to the attention of the Rachel. Dan and Mike were 'volunteered'
to meet with Rachel when she gets back from vacation, and Patricia also volunteered to be a part of that discussion.
§
It
was suggested that Dan and Patricia should meet with Dennis prior to a meeting with Rachel to determine what would be the
expectation of such a venture if we did invite Rev. Gibbs to speak (prayer support for the prisoners and their families, educational,
tying this ministry to our Christian commitment, volunteering?, etc). Dan and
Patricia to follow up with Dennis.
