The Peace and Justice Community at Saint Cross

The Hermosa Beach Chapter of
Episcopal Peace Fellowship
Our Mission
Statement
The
Peace and Justice Community of St. Cross Episcopal
Church, with God’s help, works to fulfill our baptismal promise to “strive for peace and justice, and respect
the dignity of every human being."
Our History
As Christians with a wide range of viewpoints, we felt the need to join with others for an open
discussion of ideas.
We found that we did not often have the opportunity to come together to discuss
peace and justice issues. We also felt the need to become more educated as well
as more vocal on these issues.
In rereading our baptismal vows we were reminded of the promises we made to God to strive for peace
and justice, to treat all people with dignity and respect, and to seek and serve Christ in all persons whether or not they
were Christians. This confirmed our feeling that we needed to begin acting more
intentionally to honor these sacred promises. It was in this spirit that our
Community was formed.

Our Approach
We
believe that how we live our lives is the
best witness for our beliefs.
Our
approach is to make the love of Jesus Christ known to those around us – not by preaching, cajoling, browbeating, or
marginalizing those with whom we disagree – but through inclusion, peacemaking, reconciliation, and respecting the dignity
of all in our work, political, and personal relationships.
“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8
Programs and Activities
The
programs of the Peace and Justice Community aim to further our goal of being active ministers of peace and justice in the
world. We accomplish this through:
◦
prayer
◦
volunteer support
◦
financial assistance
◦
education and
◦
advocacy.
In
all we do, we seek to be informed, sustained, and guided by our Lord, Jesus Christ.
We are also guided by the peace and justice policies of the Episcopal Church, U.S.A.
Some of our activities include:
◊ Book studies
◊ The CROP Walk
◊ A monthly gathering to discuss
videos, hear presentations, etc.
◊ Election information forums
◊ Earth Day programs
◊ Fair trade promotion
We
also support the work of other ministries at St. Cross Church, Episcopal Peace Fellowship, South Coast Interfaith Council,
Episcopal Relief and Development, and various local, national and international organizations engaged in peace and justice
efforts.
“Without justice, there
can be no peace. He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.”
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
The Annual Retreat
We realize
that the calling to be ministers of peace and justice – the calling of all baptized Christians – can sometimes
feel overwhelming. Once a year we have a retreat where we come together as a
community to seek God’s help in our ministry and to find personal, spiritual, and group renewal.
