Peace and Justice Community Meeting

Attendees: Susan Tucker, Edwin Kampmann, Laura Geisel, Laurie Dodson, Patricia Terry, Diane Margrave, Gene Hassan, Katherine Crockett, Jane Affonso, and Cheryl Proval.

The meeting began at 11:40AM.

Patricia led the opening prayer.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Forum - July 29th

Patricia gave a report on the recent MDG forum. She thanked everyone for their help and support in putting on the event.

Participation by the attendees was excellent and was one of the highlights of the forum. The number of attendees was estimated to be between 25-30 people, which was good for a low attendance Sunday.

We discussed the possibility of having a future event to discuss support for possible MDG projectsin the future which would include support for existing projects such as Belize, St. Thomas, and the Helen and Bruce's project in Kenya.

Several people are also interested in exploring support for micro-business loans to people in Africa. Patricia also reported on a medical project in Africa that Margy knows about. It is run by an American physician who is gives sanctuary to those in need of her care at great person risk.

Patricia agreed to help to coordinate the MDGs on behalf of the Peace and Justice Community.

Summer Breakfast - August 19th

Laurie gave a report on the upcoming breakfast. She said that based upon recent attendance we can expect about 60 people for the breakfast. She is satisfied with the number of people who have agreed to bring fruit and casseroles. Laurie will also bring a ham. Patricia offered to bring two quiches. There is sufficient milk and cereal for the children already on stock in the kitchen.

Because of another event going on at the church, the tables and chairs will already be set up for us on Saturday.

Laurie has requested that volunteers meet her at the church at 4PM on Saturday to set the tables.

If you are bringing a dish that must be heated up, please bring it to the church by 7AM on Sunday. If you have already pre-heated your dish, please plan to arrive around 7:30AM.

Everything must be cleaned up and cleared by 12PM on Sunday because another group needs the parish hall for the afternoon. Therefore, we will need to begin the clean-up while the breakfast is underway. A cash box is also needed to collect the donations for the breakfast.

Susan asked the group to consider donating the proceeds of the breakfast donations to "Camp Coast Care" and "Mission on the Bay", two organizations that provide food and shelter to the volunteers who are working to repair and build homes for individuals affected be Katrina.

Next Sunday, Ricardo will be speaking to the congregation about the need for volunteers for the upcoming building trip for St. Thomas next week, which will include the need for prayer partners. Therefore, a breakfast that focuses on Katrina related mission work would be timely. A motion to make this the theme of the Peace and Justice Community Breakfast was made and seconded. The motion carried.

Susan will make a display board explaining the purpose of the breakfast donations and will also include pictures of her recent visit to St. Thomas parish.  The miniature peace polls that Gene made will be used as centerpieces on the tables. Susan agreed to contact Patricia to discuss ways to weave one or more of the MDGs into the theme for the breakfast. Something about the MDGs will also be on each table.

Edwin gave us handouts on various topics including the Nonviolent Peaceforce,Ratatouille, an article entitled "Barking Mad", and an upcoming film event.

Laura led the closing prayer.

The meeting concluded at 12:30PM.

July 8, 2007

Peace and Justice Community meeting

Attendees: Dan Wilson, Hal Hurst, Laura Geisel, guest France Spedding (Laura’s mom), Gene Hasson, Chris Angelo, Patricia Terry, Laurie Dodson, Mary Margaret Hurst, Bitsy Lutton, Patsy Brierley, Jane Affonso.

July Forum on the Millennium Development Goals: Patricia discussed the plans so far. There will be a Power Point presentation along with scripture to generate interest/discussion on the MDG’s. Ministry leaders from St. Cross have been invited to present how they ministry supports the goals. Patricia and Chris discussed inviting the youth to participate by reading portions of the presentation. They will coordinate that effort with Chris seeking youth volunteers and Patricia seeking an equal number of adults.

Forum Location: It was decided that the Chapel is probably a better location for the forum. Laura will submit the information to the Daily Breeze, the Easy Reader and the Beach Reporter to invite the public to attend.

Bulletin Board: Jane, Pat W. and Margy have created a new bulletin board display and 2 smaller posters to publicize the event. Fr. Paul has said he will incorporate the topic in a sermon on one of the next 2 Sundays, and we are allowed one announcement. Dan will talk to Fr. Paul about the timing. Jane and Margy created a flyer, which will be given to Patricia for possible additional information, and distributed at the Sunday services. Dan will man the table at the forum where a few items will be sold.

Poverty in Africa: Jana Self left a few copies of an article on poverty in Africa for the members of our community. Dan suggested that she be asked to talk about it at the forum.

Summer Breakfast Aug. 19: Laurie Dodson has volunteered to chair this event. Hal and Laura will give her information regarding menus/quantities, etc. from the previous 2 years.

Peace Pole: Discussion surrounded the gathering around the Peace Pole on Sundays following the 10 AM service. Patsy suggested it should be a lay-led event. Patricia will lead the prayers starting next Sunday. Laura will ask that a notice be put in the Sunday bulletin that this will be an on-going weekly event. It was also discussed that we should have a gathering during the week and publicize it via the newspapers. No decision made.

Universal Health Care: Jane passed out flyers/postcards from www.onecarenow.org, with information on the 2 pieces of current legislation before the legislature as well as the governor’s plan. There is a forum at Torrance Memorial on Thursday. Discussion followed regarding having a forum at St. Cross on this topic to present the options being considered. Chris will work with Jane and Margy.

Movies: Edwin handed out flyers about current movies. He highly recommended Gypsy Caravan and Ratatouille.

The meeting ended with prayer at 12:30.

Laura Geisel

 June 24, 2007

Place: St. Cross Guild Room

Opening Prayer: Mary Munford

In attendance: Jane Affonso, Wanda Arcos, Jackie Booth,  Laurie Dodson, Gene Hasson, Margy Harrell, Hal Hurst, Edwin Kampmann, Jean Mannings,  Diane Margrave, Ed Margrave, Ashley Rennageh, Patricia Terry,  Susan Tucker, Dan Wilson

Corazon: Hal H. and Peter Coote reported on the Corazon build that took place on June 16th south of Tecote in rural Mexico. Forty people from St. Cross and from  St. Augustine in Santa Monica gathered in hot weather to build a home for a needy Mexican family. The general feeling was that it was an inspiring experience to be of service to others, and a thank you was extended to our St. Cross family who supported the workers with prayers, gifts for the family and financial support for the project.

Suggestions: Consider a different time for future builds when the weather would be cooler.

St. Thomas Barbeque: A thank you was given to Susan Tucker who coordinated Peace and Justice’s role in the fund raising and participation in the St. Cross barbeque honoring Bishop Gray from the Diocese of Mississippi The Reznicheks provided their home for the warm welcome, and

All in attendance had a good time. Peace and Justice was able to give $2,500 to the Bishop to help in the rebuilding process in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In addition, $100 was raised in last minute bead and candy sales. The vestry and the parish collection also added to the total contribution.

Labyrinth: The walk of the labyrinth was successfully conducted on June 21st. Laura G., in particular, was instrumental in helping with this endeavor. Although this was a particularly busy time with graduation, Father’s Day. Corazon and the Bishop of Mississippi’s visit all occurring near the same time, there is significance to having the labyrinth on the solstice.

California Council of Churches Communiqués from the Calif. Council of Churches recommended seeing Michael Moore’s film “Sicko” with its emphasis on healthcare. They also expressed concern for funding the School of the Americas that is teaching students techniques in torturing, and the council was also concerned that U.S. foreign food distributions were, in fact, harming indigenous farmers and their means of livelihood.

Congregational Forum: The next forum is scheduled for the fifth Sunday in July and will be presented by Patricia Terry. The topic will be the millennium development and its effort to change the world. Jane A., Dan W., Diane M. and Hal H. volunteered to help with publicity and other details and Jane suggested that we sell bracelets to help bring awareness to this important issue.. Jane is the co-leader of the Social Concerns Council of the Southern Calif. Interfaith Council and she gives added insight to our group. Margy H. will work with the clergy and find an appropriate location for the forum.

Summer Breakfast: The Peace and Justice Committee will host the August l9th breakfast. Jean M., Laurie D., Diane and Ed M. Gene H. and Wanda R. volunteered to plan and prepare the menu and Dan W., Patricia T. and Margy H. agreed to help serve at the breakfast.

Priorities: At future meetings we will be focusing on priorities for the coming year, perhaps meeting in small groups to consider choices. The possibilities include the plight of Iraqi refugees, the torture at Abu Ghrab, and the “Focus on Poverty” in “Vote ‘08”. We hope to encourage youth involvement as well.

Opportunities: A recommendation was made to return to the peace pole at the front of the church for prayers following Sunday services.

The corner of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway would be a good place to walk with placards demonstrating a desire for peace.

The Torrance Library is currently presenting a program on
”Climate Change.”

Closing Prayer: Patricia Terry

 Respectfully submitted: Laurie Dodson

Minutes from June 10, 2007 Peace and Justice Meeting

Present:  Hal Hurst, Laurie Dodson, Bill Stenton, Ricardo Reznicheck, Tom Malone, Mary Malone, Patricia Terry, Diane Margrave, Richard Lawrence, Laura Geisel, Patsy Brierley, Jean Mannings, Cheryl Proval, Gene Hasson, Susan Tucker, Chris Angelo, and Margy Harrell.

The meeting began at 11:30 AM.

Patricia Terry led opening prayer.

Corazon

Richard Lawrence reported that everything is going well and is on schedule for the build next Saturday.  We are fully staffed and have raised $800-1,000 more than we needed.  A motion was made to give the excess funds as a student scholarship.  The motion was unanimously passed.  The following items were requested for the new occupants of the house:  tooth paste, any useful hygiene products, towels, curtain rods, canned goods, dishes, and a can opener.  Various persons at the meeting volunteered to provide the requested items.

Bishop Gray's "Beach BBQ")

Ricardo mentioned that sign-up sheets have been posted for the July 17th pot luck "Beach BBQ" in honor of Bishop Gray of the Diocese of Mississippi.   All are invited to help out if they can and are urged to attend.

St. Thomas Church Building Project

Ricardo reported that a team from St. Cross will be going to Mississippi in November (probably the week before Thanksgiving) to help St. Thomas with a building project.  Susan and Ricardo are going in August to firm up the details.  The trip will last a week and 10 people are needed to help with the project.  If more would like to come there are other projects in the area that need assistance so all who want to be involved can participate.  Peace and Justice has $2,000 in its account to give to St. Thomas.  We will present a check to Bishop Gray when he visits next week.  Plans for additional fundraising for the project are in place and if we exceed our goals a better structure than the one currently planned will be made possible.  More information on this project will be provided at a later date.

The Labyrinth

Volunteers are needed on Wed. June 20th from 7-7:30 PM to help Laura set up the Labyrinth.  Patricia and Patsy volunteered.

Solar Power Presentation

Margy encouraged members to attend the presentation on solar power options for the St. Cross capital improvement project that will take place on Sunday, June 24th, between the two services.  It should be very informative.  Margy also gave us a handout on Solar Homes Tours that will take place at various locations in South Bay on Sat. June 16th.

Sunday Forums

There will be a 5th Sunday Forum on July 29th.  Margy suggested inviting a group of inter-faith teenagers that she is aware of to speak to us about being in relationship with those of other faith traditions.  The inter-faith youth group is sponsored by Dr. Sophia Momund who previously spoke at St. Cross on Islamic culture and who was very well received.  A P&J meeting was scheduled to take place on July 22nd.  Hal moved to cancel the meeting in light of the fact that we will be meeting on July 8th and will also be participating in the July 19th forum.  The motion passed unanimously.

Margy suggested that a future forum might be held on the topic of health care.

Summer Breakfast

Peace and Justice has signed up to do a summer breakfast on August 19th.

Acknowledgment of Hal's Website Work

Hal was presented with a card and a small gift in appreciation of his long hours and outstanding work on the P&J website.  After the presentation, Hal asked those who had not yet e-mailed their write-ups for the Peace & Justice website to please do so.

Mayan Chocolate Bars

We were provided copies of an article on efforts to organically grow indigenous cocoa trees in Belize, rather than hybrids that harm the environment.  The organically grown cocoa not only create sustainable farming practices, they are helping farmers in Belize to lift themselves out of poverty.

Patricia led the group in closing prayers for the Corazon Project.

The meeting ended at 12:30PM

In a post-meeting conversation among about 10 members, the reusable grocery bags and art work for Earth Day were discussed. It was decided that the words ‘Stewards of the earth’ should appear below the artwork and leave off the ‘we’re all in the same boat’.

Respectfully submitted,

Laura Geisel

Supplemental material:

Regarding the discussion of Corazon: Richard Lawrence

The total we need to raise is 3,400 (unless we're going to go forward with the bathroom which is an additional 500 - 250 each).

Here's the feedback I've gotten on possible dates for Corazon: we used to do our project at the end of September and I started getting complaints that it was too close to back to school, so we tried for a different date. July and August wasn't good because it would be too hot. April isn't good because of tax time. May and June are a problem as well because school is letting out and there are final exams and graduation to cope with. There just isn't a good time to do it, so we pick a date and get whomever we can to go.

Richard

In the interest of saving paper in support of environmental concerns, the minutes will be published on the DJLM website starting with the meeting on 3/25

d. Margy announced the book 'Generous Orthodoxy' is available for $12.  She will have them at the Thursday Lenten program as well.  Edwin suggested we notify Jane A. from Trinity Lutheran, that we are reading the book and ask if any members of her church group would like to join us. 16 of the 30 copies we purchased at $12 each have been picked up so far. Let Margy know to save you a copy if you want one since they will be made available to the Thursday night group as well.

e. Planning For The Next Congregational Forum And Earth Day is underway.  There will be a meeting at Wanda's Tuesday evening at 7:00 - all are invited who would like to participate. Ideas discussed include having children/youth participate in a panel discussion, posters made by the children/youth of the parish, and joining other citizens for community cleanups.  Ricardo reminded us that the Diocese adopted environmental goals at the last convention and we should incorporate them in our programs.

f. Sign up for the walking meditation: Dan Wilson, Margy Harrell, Laura Geisel ?, Susan Tucker?, Hal Hurst

g. Peace Rally signup:Cheryl Proval, Laura Geisel, Susan Tucker, Dan Wilson, Hal Hurst, Margy Harrell.  We will organize logistics between ourselves.

h. The Book Study Committee is Diane Margrave, Susan Tucker, Mary Munford, Patricia Terry, Charles Gessler, and Edwin Kampmann.  Susan will contact members and set up a meeting time for planning.  Members decided that the most members could attend a study group on Tuesday night. It was suggested by Edwin that we publicize the forum to other south bay churches, especially Trinity Lutheran.

i. Future Concerns: Ricardo suggested that we pay some attention to the slavery issue, possibly as one of our forum topics.  He provided some material from The Economist which will be posted on the economic justice page of the DJLM website.

j. Corazon Fundraising: It was the sense of the meeting to pursue a sponsored builder approach to fundraising- with each builder committed to raise their share of the financial expenses, estimated to be about $200. Cheryl to contact Richard Lawrence for buy-in, and serve as fundraiser for him. Hal will come up with a prototype fundraising and thank you letter to work with.  We need to get a figure for how many builders we can have, to determine the funraising goal.  Next we need to designate builders as soon as possible so that fundraising can begin, using the informational letter being concurrently developed.

k. The meeting concluded approximately 1 PM with a Celtic blessing: "Deep Peace" led by Pat Woolley

Sermons by Marcus Borg:

Hal Hurst and Laura Geisel

Notes of the February 25, 2007  Peace & Justice (P&J) Meeting
(pending approval)   -Thanks to Patricia Terry!

The following were present:  Hal Hurst, Margy Harrell, Mary Munford, Patricia W., Audrie Wing, Patricia Terry, Susan Tucker, Jean Manning, Cheryl Proval, Edwin Kampmann, Mary Margaret Hurst, Richard Lawrence, Wanda Arcos, Laurie Dodson, Charles Gessler, and Laura Geisel and Jane Alfonso.

The meeting convened at 11:50AM.

Mary Munford led the group in an opening prayer from the Episcopal Relief and Development Lent reflections booklet.

Each agenda item  for the meeting is separately discussed below:

A. Organizational Developments

Additions to the existing P&J Project Coordinators who are already listed on our website are as follows:

Youth Liaisons: Chris A. and Laurie D.
Capital Punishment: Charlie G.
Peace:  Margy H.

B. Meeting Time and Place

It was noted that the change in the service time has made it difficult for some of our members to remain after church for the meeting.  At some point in the future we will discuss possible alternatives to both the time and place of P&J meetings.

C. The P&J Book Study

By unanimous vote, the recommendation of the book study committee to read "A Generous Orthodoxy" was approved.  Margy will have books for purchase at the next P&J meeting.  Since many of us are planning to attend the Phyllis Tickle series at the church during March, we will not begin the book study until April at the earliest.  The exact dates will be decided in the near future.

D. The Corazon Project

Richard L. reported that our share of the Corazon build will be $3,400. and that for an extra $250 we can have a bathroom.  Unfortunately, there is no available money in this year's budget that can be used for this project.  Richard has indicated that he will be going to the vestry to request assistance.  Other suggestions for fundraising were:  (1) selling energy saving lightbulbs and shopping bags as part of an Earth Day event; (2) a walkathon; (3) direct solicitation of area business people.  Those who volunteered to help organize the fund-raising projects for Corazon are Cheryl P., Patricia T.,  Susan T. and Patricia W.

E.  "The No More Broken Hearts" Rally and Peace March

The rally and peace march at Polliwog Park on February 11th was a great success.  Dan took wonderful pictures at the event and they can be seen on our website.

F.  Fundraising for St. Thomas

Margy thanked everyone who helped with Shrove Tuesday which was really well attended. Cameron did a fantastic job and the money that we raised will be used to help St. Thomas.

We are also selling fair trade chocolate which not only helps the Ghanaian cocoa farmers, who set the price, but will also help raise additional funds for St. Thomas.

Susan reported that St. Thomas already has a sign but would appreciate our help with other building projects.  They need a storage shed to store the vestments, patens, chalices, and other items used for worship which other area churches would use as well.  They would also like to build a pavilion for the youth and possibly a barbeque pit.  They have some of their own funds for these projects but could use additional financial support and "manpower".  We discussed to taking this on as a long term project and want to help as much as we can both financially and in terms of a possible construction trip.

G.  Progressive Christians United Fund Raiser

Margy reported that it was a wonderful event and that Marcus Borg was "sterling!"  According to Marcus Borg, a 10% change in the voting populace will change everything.  He spoke on both Old and New Testament themes of God's justice and compassion and the need for continued focus on economic justice in our world today.  According to Borg, something of primary importance in the church today is to help people to really connect with God so that God's passion will become our passion.

H.  Membership in Episcopal Peace Fellowship

Our P&J group is now officially a member of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF).  Hal will begin posting the newsletters on the website.  You do not need an individual membership in EPF unless you choose to.  You may also contribute towards the cost of the group membership on a voluntary basis.  Those who helped to pay for this year's group membership are Chris A., Wanda A., Laura G., Charles G.,  Margy H.,  Hal H.,  Jean M., Cheryl P., Dan W. and Audrie W.

I.  The P&J Website

Hal distributed a membership information sheet and asked that we each complete the information and return it to him.  All members are asked to submit pictures and a write-up for the website.  Hal also offered to take pictures after the meeting. The address for our new website is http://dojusticelovemercy.org .  The members are very pleased with how it has been put together so nicely and thanked Hal for all of his hard work.

J.  The March 17th March for Peace

Those of us who are participating on the March 17th Peace March agreed to take public transportation to meet downtown at noon.  Hal gave information on the cost of sign making.  We discussed borrowing the signs from the "No More Broken Hearts" rally.  Other ideas for making signs were shared, including making a permanent banner for the P&J group.

K.  Handouts

The following handouts were available for the members to take with them at the conclusion of the meeting:

1. FCNL Legislative Priorities for the 110th Congress
2. A flyer with information about showings of the film, "Killer of Sheep"
3. A February 18, 2007 sermon by Rev. Canon John L. Peterson, Canon for Global Justice and Reconciliation for the Washington National Cathedral on the topic of justice and the Millennium Development Goals

Patricia T. led the group in closing prayer.

The meeting concluded at 1:05 PM
