Peace Pole draws People's Prayers
HH 7/17/07
After a period of inactivity, the peace pole in front of Saint Cross has been the site of renewed prayers for peace,
on Sunday mornings after the 10:00 service (about 11:30AM) and also on some evenings during the week.
Patricia Terry, who serves as one of our community's lay chaplains, kicked off the new cycle of peace pole prayers.
"Really, anybody can lead these prayers," she said. "There isn't any formal format. We just gather and join
hands, and then let God know your concerns for peace around the world. Wouldn't it be wonderful if other people in the
area began to come and share this with us?"
Patricia has made some prayer suggestions available on the Faith and Values page of this website.

Jim Wallis: Marching Orders
On Friday, I [Jim Wallis] shared a preview of my speech for the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq. Here is the full text of my message at the National Cathedral,
where I and other religious leaders spoke to a capacity crowd before processing to the White House.

CAP Leadership, 219 Others Arrested
Not a day's worth of sleet and snow, not the cancellation
of over 3000 flights nationwide due to weather, not a nasty opposition press release ... ...none of these things could
hold back the swell of Christians who gathered in Washington on Friday night in the name of the Prince of Peace to call our
nation back to His values..

There are some articles that one should not have to write. The thesis they defend should be so obvious that setting it forward
should be unnecessary. However, there has been a remarkable degree of saber-rattling toward Iran over the last several months.
Further, a founding document of so-called neoconservatism claimed that, "Over the long term, Iran may well prove as large a threat to U.S. interests in the Gulf as Iraq has” (and we
all know how swimmingly our project in Iraq has gone!). So, unfortunately, it does seem necessary to make and defend the obvious
claim: Christian faith is inconsistent with the central tenets of neoconservatism. Let me briefly summarize why this is so...

"No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare." -- James Madison
“We seek peace” G. W. Bush boldly claimed during his 2003 State-of-the-Union address. In 2004, it was, “Our
aim is a democratic peace.” In the next year’s address he explained how promoting freedom rather than fear and
hatred leads to peace. All the while he has been waging two wars. Three if you count our support of Israel in the recent battle
in Lebanon. And Iran could be our fourth. Our leaders (not just Bush) talk peace but wage war. This is nothing new. So I ask:
How do we – we as a nation – seek peace?

De-Escalation Act Introduced in Congress
Urge your representatives to support the Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007
February 7, 2006—Rep Mike Thompson (D-Calif) and Rep Patrick Murphy
(D-Penn) introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that would stop the escalation of the war in Iraq and require the president to begin deploying troops out of Iraq by May 1 of this year. The legislation, H.R.787, which
would cap the number of troops at January 10, 2007, levels and put forth specific benchmarks for success in Iraq, was introduced in the Senate by Sen Barack Obama (D-Ill). The measures
contained in the legislation are in concert with the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group.
